A man was walking down a country road. He happened to look to the side of the road and saw a shoebox lying there. Inside were new shoes, so he took them home. The next day, when he went to run an errand at the temple, he put on the shoes he had found; they fit perfectly. As he was sweeping the temple grounds with a broom, he felt a sharp pain in his foot, and the shoes began to shrink. He rolled around in agony. The yokai, Kyūkutsu (the Poverty Shoes), had appeared. When his foot was reduced to one-third of its original size, the shoes flew away somewhere.
